What is bacteriostatic water?

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with a small amount of preservative added, which is what lets a mixed vial be used more than once instead of all at once. Whether it's the right diluent for a given compound depends on that compound's own instructions — it isn't a universal substitute.

Storage time, mixing ratios, and handling can all vary by compound. When in doubt, follow the product's own labeling.

0.9% Benzyl alcohol

The preservative concentration typically used in bacteriostatic water. It's not appropriate for every compound or every situation.

Never substitute a diluent unless the compound's own instructions specifically call for it.

Why mg, mcg, and units are all different

Vials are usually labeled in mg, but most syringes are marked in units on a 1 mL, 100-unit scale — so a straight mg reading doesn't tell you where to draw the plunger to. This calculator bridges that gap: 1 mg = 1,000 mcg, and on a standard syringe, 1 mL = 100 units.

What "concentration" actually means here

BAC water (bacteriostatic water) is just the liquid you mix into the vial. Once it's in, the math is one simple division: what's on the vial, divided by how much liquid you added. We show you that number so you can double-check it yourself — nothing hidden.

What this tool doesn't do
